Starting (or revamping) a wedding beauty regimen is a great way to practice some self-care, allowing you to de-stress ahead of your nuptials. And of course, each step will aid you in perfecting your wedding-day look, from smoothing your skin to strengthening your hair.

Getting the Wedding Glow.

With all eyes on you, not to mention photos that will live on in infamy, you’ll want to have a flawless face free of dry skin, blemishes, and other skin impurities. 

For delicate facial skin, you’ll want to start prepping months in advance—most experts say six months before your wedding day is an excellent place to start. 

Beginning a daily beauty regimen by exfoliating, cleansing, toning, and moisturising morning and night can make a massive difference in the appearance of your skin. 

Although cleansing and moisturising might be the more obvious steps, it’s important not to skimp out on toning—toning will help restore pH balance, reduce the appearance of pores, and refresh your skin after cleansing. 

As far as products go, everyone’s skin reacts differently. Starting your regimen this far in advance will give you the chance to test different products to see which ones work the best for you.

It’s not a bad idea to lean toward more natural options because synthetic chemicals, like fragrances and colours, are more prone to drying out the skin and causing breakouts and irritations.

Develop a Foolproof Skincare Regime (and Stick to It!)

Find a routine that’s affordable, achievable and works for your skin. You can do this using the old-fashioned trial-and-error method, but it’s also worth seeking advice from a facialist or makeup artist you trust. 

And when you’ve found a perfect regime, don’t go fiddling with it, especially as you get closer to the big day! Avoid making changes to your topical skincare routine just before the wedding.

Decide If Retinol Is Right for You

Derived from vitamin A, retinol increases cell turnover, unclogs pores, boosts collagen, and helps diminish hyperpigmentation. 

The prescription version, aka retinoid, is even more powerful. Still, as great as they are, both retinol and prescription-strength retinoids can cause redness and peel at the outset and even a possible uptick in acne before all those benefits kick in. 

It is recommended that patients start with non-prescription retinol for at least four to eight weeks before progressing to a prescription retinoid. Their skin will tolerate it better.

Smooth Skin All Over.

Although your wedding gown may cover many areas, that’s all the more reason to highlight the visible zones like your neck, chest, back, and shoulders. 

You can consider the neck and chest an extension to the face—the skin is just as delicate, if not more, and requires similar maintenance. When washing, exfoliating, and moisturising, make sure you’re hitting these spots as well. 

As for back and shoulders, exfoliate while in the bath or shower, and follow a gentle cleanser and moisturising lotion daily. This will keep your exposed skin looking and feeling soft and smooth.

For the rest of the body, consider incorporating a dry body brush into your morning routine. Body brushing has many benefits, including improving circulation (bye-bye cellulite), getting rid of dry, dead skin, helping prevent ingrown hairs, eliminating toxins, and unclogging pores. 

This process will only set you back five minutes and doesn’t require a visit to a spa or dermatologist. On dry skin before bathing, start on the front of your body with your ankles and work upwards in a circular motion toward your heart. 

When you move to your back, brush from the neck down to the lower back. To ensure your skin is at its purest, follow with a shower to wash away dead skin and don’t forget to seal your beautiful skin with your favourite moisturiser.

Set up an Appointment With Your Dermatologist

There are two key reasons to get a derm in your corner early on: One, they can assess your complexion’s current state way better than you and your trusty magnifying mirror. 

And two, they can help you devise a strategy for achieving your dream-skin goals, be it softening pesky forehead wrinkles or zapping acne. 

Some treatments take time—up to several months—and you certainly want a game plan.

Consider Laser Hair Removal

There’s no better excuse than your wedding (and honeymoon) to treat yourself to laser hair removal. Is it a splurge? Yes, but it will be so worth it when shaving your armpits and legs is the last thing on your mind. 

Depending on where you go, planning should be done 9 to 12 months before the wedding, as it typically takes six sessions spaced six weeks apart to see permanent results.

Visit an Aesthetician for Regular Facials

Find a reputable aesthetician in your area to help keep skin in tip-top shape. In your initial chat with a prospective aesthetician, make sure you address your goals and needs—don’t be afraid to speak up.

Look for someone who’s a good listener. 

Old-school facialists would dictate your care. These days the best ones work with your budget, your goals, and your skin. Don’t go overboard with the treatments either, because flare-ups post-facials are likely.

Exfoliate and Follow up With a Brightening Serum

As dead cells accumulate on the skin, they interfere with light reflection giving it a dull appearance. 

The solution: Regular exfoliation paired with a brightening serum to give you the best lit-from-within glow on your wedding day. 

Regular exfoliation removes dead cells to improve radiance and can enhance skin brightening products through the skin. 

Exfoliate once per week initially, and advance to twice per week after a month or so if you can tolerate it.

Tips for Happy Hands and Feet.

If there is one day in your life that you’d want to have beautiful hands, it’s your wedding day. The face and hands—and sometimes feet—are the most often exposed, which leaves them more vulnerable to impurities of the skin. 

Prepare the hands for all of those close-ups and showing off your ring by using a moisturising lotion throughout the day, every day, especially after you wash them. Try to avoid soaps prone to drying; this will protect against cracking, calluses, and roughness. 

And like professional spa treatments caring for your face, if you plan to get a manicure or a pedicure close to the date, make sure you’ve gone through a few trials runs. That way, you can trust your mani/Pedi artist and know exactly how your skin and nails react to the spa’s products. 

Although your feet might not be the main event, you’ll still want to have soft soles on your wedding night. Because your feet are under significant stress daily, moisturising is also something you’ll need to practice on your feet daily. 

You can deeply hydrate the skin by using a thick layer of your favourite moisturiser and pairing it with cotton mittens and socks during the night. 

The cotton will still allow the skin to breathe, but this method will penetrate the skin more intensely—and save your sheets.

Maintain Healthy, Clear Skin That Lasts.

Generally, there are a few things to keep in mind that will benefit every inch of your skin. First and foremost: Drink plenty of water. Water will flush toxins from the body, and given enough time; it will aid in the fight against breakouts. 

Other ways to heal the skin from the inside out is to adopt a natural, whole foods diet and lifestyle (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats) and consider taking supplements. 

To cover all of your bases, you might want to pick up a multivitamin, but specifically for skin, biotin, omega-3, and vitamin E supplements are all excellent choices. 

Just consult your doctor before you start any supplement intake. You know what they say: You are what you eat. And when you’re giving the skin—as well as all of your other organs—the nourishment they need, you’ll not only look fabulous, but you’ll feel fabulous, too. 

Also, if you find yourself in the sun often, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and wearing appropriate clothing. 

Brides often want to rock a beautiful bronze, but baking in the sun or an artificial tanning bed is not worth the potential of drying out wrinkles and age spots. If you want a great-looking tan, opt for spray or self-tanners. 

Lastly, if you do find yourself with a rouge blemish or other skin emergency the day of Don’t Panic. Try not to irritate it further by poking and prodding. As we learned in middle school, poking will usually only make the situation worse. 

If your blemish lands on your face, gently exfoliate and cleanse before makeup, and follow with an anti-blemish cream. Apply a primer to even out skin texture, then use concealer on and around the blemish.

Manage Stress

Skip the Wine and Get to Juicing

Because vino is such a world-class dehydrator, capillary breaker, and radiance robber, downing endless glasses is one of the most significant crimes against complexion brides-to-be commit. 

Suppose it’s too hard to part ways with your wine, at least cut back and substitute that Bordeaux with liquefied leafy greens—especially during the few months leading up to your wedding. 

Green juice is excellent for the skin because it’s oxygenating and contains vital minerals to help stimulate the lymphatic system and drain puffiness. One a day is perfect.

Drink More Water

This is not a particularly original tip, but believe us, it works! 

There are dozens of health benefits to drinking lots of water – hydrated skin is just one of them – so there’s no excuse to put this one off any longer. Water helps to hydrate skin from within. 

Drinking 1.6 litres of water a day is not only crucial for overall health but also helps to improve the look and feel of your skin, so drink up before the big day! 

If you think you might struggle with this one, try using a water bottle with motivational markings or training yourself with an app.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is probably the quickest way to give your skin a boost, Emma says. It can do wonders for the skin. 

Skin cells are constantly being renewed day and night, but the cell turnover is eight times faster at night than during the day. 

There are many little tricks you can employ to help improve the quantity and quality of your sleep, including developing a sleep schedule, getting a bit more exercise throughout the day, creating a relaxing bedtime ritual, or giving your bed a makeover with new pillows or bed linen.

Eat More Vegetables

It’s no secret that your diet can have a significant impact on the appearance of your skin! 

You must be eating the right foods ahead of your wedding day, not only to ensure you feel great but also to help your skin look its best as you walk down the aisle. 

Eating protein-rich foods provides the nutrients your body needs to make collagen, allowing the skin to preserve its firmness and elasticity. 

Fresh fruit and vegetables are a great source of Vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin.
