Watch A Film At Fed Square
Welcome to The People's Place. Yes, Fed Square is a global icon, but it would be nothing without the hundreds of human stories created there every day.
The People's Place is your digital memory board, where you can share your special experiences of Fed Square. From the personal to the political, the tiny to the terrific: We want them all!
It might not be quite the same as jetting off on an international getaway, but Federation Square is about to get a taste of Miami beach life as part of a two-week pop-up this February.
A whole heap of sand will transform the CBD space into a tropical oasis inspired by the South Florida city's beaches. As well as a 'beach', the pop-up will have lots of deckchairs, cabanas, live music and even its open-air cinema, which will be completely free. You can head along to a screening of Puberty Blues on Friday, February 7, sob (again) to The Notebook on Valentine's Day, or cheer on Thelma & Louise on Saturday, February 15, without spending a cent. You can check out the full lineup of films below.
There'll be lots of fun snacks, too, so you can laze in a cabana and tuck into ice creams and sliders after work. Watch out, also, fir life-sized seagulls trying to steal your chips. If you head along on opening day at 5 pm — and quote a password that'll be shared on Fed Square's Facebook page — you can score yourself one of 100 free ice creams and a performance by Melbourne singer Ernest Aines.

Try an Innocent Bystander Valentine's Picnic
Making seriously delicious wines that we love to share
At Innocent Bystander, our passion for sharing seriously good wine – not too seriously – unites us. There's nothing we love more than to rise above the noise and bring some joy to wine's all-too-sober conversations.
We make the wines we love to drink and share, from delectable Pinot Noir to effervescent Moscato, starting every vintage with the finest grapes from our home in the Yarra Valley and beyond. From here, the severe winemaking bit is easy. Gentle coercion in open fermenters or lazy days maturing in barrel, we treat each parcel of fruit individually to draw out its unique character.
Our wines can be found across the globe, but if you want the full Innocent Bystander experience, come by our place in Healesville. It's a bar, a restaurant and your home away from home, serving our full range of wines along with shared dishes, wood-fired pizza, paella and other tasty treats. Here our wine isn't the centre of attention; you are!
Healesville's Innocent Bystander has launched gourmet picnic packs for Valentine's Day. They include a selection of cheeses, cured meats, veggies, a baguette as well as chocolates and truffles for dessert. Naturally, you can pair it with a bottle of Innocent Bystander Moscato or rosé. You can know more on their website.
Stay Overnight at Hotel Chadstone.
Hotel Chadstone is a five-star, $130 million development operated under the MGallery by Sofitel brand. Located within the Chadstone complex, there are 250 rooms, including 21 suites and two flash-as-hell penthouses.
Each suite has been thoughtfully curated to maximise guest comfort and relaxation while upholding the hotel's stylish aesthetic. You'll feel the thick pile carpet beneath your toes, help yourself to an Everliegh bottled cocktail from the minibar, play around with the electronic curtains and dimming lights, relax in the spa-like bathrooms and order room service until your heart's content. If you plan on making the most of the hotel's facilities or indulging in some retail therapy, you'll soon realise the suite's beds are nearly impossible to pull yourself away from.
The hotel features two in-house restaurant-bars, including a venue from hospo heavyweight Scott Pickett. Pastore, which is the Italian word for 'shepherd', honours the area's heritage as a pasture. The ground-floor restaurant is Italian-inspired, with a pull towards Australian flavours and woodfire cooking. The unpretentious menu features a selection of tasting plates, handmade pasta and grilled meats.
Altus Restaurant and the rooftop bar is the hotel's more polished venue. It boasts the Dandenongs' panoramic views and offers guests a taste of the luxe life with its fine dining seasonal menu and lavish interior decor. Think high ceilings, brushed gold metal arches, sheer floor-to-ceiling linen drapes and french navy walls; these elements work together to create a sense of modern regal living. The venue is also adults-only after 6 pm, and it upholds a smart casual dress code.
The hotel connects to the shopping centre on the ground level, right in front of Mecca Cosmetica. From there, you'll walk through Chadstone's luxury brands, including Hermes, Balenciaga, Louboutin and Louis Vuitton. If jewellery is what you're after, look around to the left to check out Tiffany & Co, Cartier or Paspaley – an Australian-owned pearl jewellery retailer that's known for selling some of the world's rarest and most valuable pearls that are often worn by the royals.
Back at the hotel, you can explore the indoor rooftop pool that connects to Altus, which means you won't have to travel far for a cocktail. The pool is located on level 12 and is open daily from 7 am until 10pm. It offers 180-degree views, so you should get a glimpse of Port Phillip Bay and the Melbourne city skyline on a clear day. The pool area has daybeds, some low-table seating and pool-side lounge chairs.

Gelato Tart Date at Gelato Messina
Gelato Messina has created a beautiful rose-inspired tart for Val's Day this year. This tart is filled with layers of basque cheese flavoured gelato and chocolate dulce de leche, and all tucked into a chocolate coffee tart shell. It's then topped with piped burnt vanilla Chantilly petals. It can be ordered online.
Gelato Messina looks more like a nightclub than a purveyor of gelati. Music pumps out of the giant glass doors, and no matter what the weather, there is a constant crowd flowing out onto the street – we've even seen a queue on a ten-degree rainy night. Such is the crazy caused by Gelato Messina. During this ragingly popular Sydney import, all-natural gelato rules and nothing, not even an anatomically accurate heart, proves too great a challenge for the iced treat architect to build.
Those queues are pretty well justified. Messina's flavours are things of wonder – there's the fruity-sharp contrast of pear, cut through with a red ribbon of sour rhubarb and the creamy, subtlety of coconut and pandan. Everything is made fresh daily, and the turnover is high, so you're always getting a scoop that's fresher and fluffier than you might elsewhere. There's a balance of sugar to sharpness, but you don't engender this kind of insane following without a good measure of the sweet stuff. The tart strawberry number and the roasted hazelnut with white chocolate hit all your nerve receptors, so if you're more a fan of subtlety, you might be better off at Gelateria Primavera in the city where sugar takes a back seat.
Await is almost always inevitable, but our recommendation is to head in early and procure yourself a large takeaway container, so you're armed in case of heatwave emergencies.

Tips for the Perfect Valentine's Day
Build It Up! Anticipation is the purest form of pleasure!
Let that special someone know you have big plans, but keep them in suspense! Drop innuendos! Call them at work a few times during the day! Leave "sweet nothing" Post It notes around the house and in the car or any other place you can think of. IM or email them, or better yet, both! Leave them a voice mail. LET THEM KNOW THEY ARE ON YOUR MIND!
Surprise them! Everyone loves surprises on special occasions!
Surprise them with a gift selected especially for them! Pick the gift out yourself. Don't have someone do it for you. Maybe it's their favourite perfume or cologne or a bottle of wine. Maybe it's a jewellery or a trip to the spa. Or maybe you offer to do chores for the week, perhaps a chore they cannot stand to do.
Make An Activity, You Both Love!
Valentine's Day is Friday this year! Take the day off and spend it together! Make it a three day weekend! Plan a trip for the weekend! Go out of town, or maybe you book a room or suite at a local hotel or bed and breakfast! If you stay at home, do some activities TOGETHER! Find something cultural that's going on around you, and go for it!
Plan, Plan, Plan! Put Some Effort into It!
Don't wait until the last minute to make those dinner reservations and then have to settle for the 2nd choice. Don't wait to buy your flowers or gifts on the big day to find out his/her special flower or cologne/perfume is sold out. If you want flowers delivered timely to the workplace, restaurant or home, place your order in advance. If you have a great idea, act on it, don't sit on it! If you wait and can't pull it off, then all it is is an idea, and it's no longer even a great idea because you didn't allow enough time to pull it off.
It's the Small Gestures That Count!
They don't go, unnoticed! Offer to help out with the chores; open doors; listen intently when spoken to; pay compliments; take care of a pressing matter that has needed some attention; fix or replace something broken; serve breakfast in bed; take the dog to the groomer; give a massage; draw a bath; have their vehicle serviced.
Start the Day Special and End the Day Special!
Make this Valentine's Day one you'll both cherish and remember from the start of the day until your head hits the pillow that night. You're both worth it!
Quality Time Together
QUALITY TIME TOGETHER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT GIFT YOU CAN GIVE ONE ANOTHER ON THIS VERY SPECIAL DAY, OR ANY OTHER DAY FOR THAT MATTER! Need we say more?!
