FAQs About Podiatrists
Your first visit to a podiatrist will be like any other doctor. They’ll ask questions about your medical history, medications you’re on, or any surgeries you’ve had.
They’ll look at how you stand and walk, check the range of motion in your joints, and see how your shoes fit. The first visit is often the time to treat bunions, ingrown toenails, heel and lower back pain, and circulation in your feet if you have diabetes and foot deformities.
The podiatrist might suggest orthotics, padding, or physical therapy treat your problems. In addition, they can treat some conditions in the office. For example, they might use tools like syringes to give you pain medication and nail splitters or a nail anvil to remove ingrown toenails. Scalpels can cut into the skin around a toenail or remove parts of corns and calluses. Many doctors use cryotherapy equipment -- liquid nitrogen -- to freeze off plantar warts.
The answer is that there is no difference. The 2 words are used interchangeably to describe the same thing… So essentially, both a chiropodist and podiatrist are foot doctors who look at foot problems and care for foot health.
Chiropody is a historic term used throughout the centuries to describe someone who specialises in the health and well-being of your feet. However, according to the Institute of chiropody and podiatry, it wasn’t until more recent years that the professional title of podiatrist was created to recognise the specialist qualifications of the profession.
- Lifting the nail. For nails that are only slightly ingrown, we can gently lift the ingrowing nail edge to separate it from the underlying skin, thus relieving the pain. We then place cotton, dental floss, or a splint under the nail to keep it away from the skin so that it can grow above the skin’s edge.
- Partially removal of the nail. If your ingrown toenail has progressed to the point of having redness, pain, and pus, we may choose to remove the ingrown part of the nail. This procedure may involve using a local anesthetic to numb your toe as the nail is removed.
- Full removal of the nail and tissue. For most people, having an ingrown toenail is an isolated incident and one that can largely be prevented with proper foot care. However, for some people, an ingrown toenail on the same toe can be a repeating, chronic problem. In such cases, we may recommend not only removing the nail but also the underlying tissue using a chemical or fine laser.
A range of sports injuries can affect your feet and require access to a podiatrist. Some of these include:
- Achilles tendinitis. The Achilles tendon is the largest in the body and can often be affected by repetitive sports injuries such as dancing or running. Overuse of the Achilles tendon can result in degeneration. This can be exacerbated with age.
- Neuroma. Quite simply, this is a pinched nerve in your foot. There can be a variety of causes, including wearing the wrong shoes, trauma or congenital problems with the shape of your feet. A neuroma is experienced as either pain in the ball of your foot or tingling and numbness, particularly between the toes or big toe whilst walking, and the nerve is irritated. Treatments to reduce the inflammation of the nerve can include shoe inserts to provide more support or possibly corticosteroid injections.
- Plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that stretches across the art of your foot and takes a lot of the stress when you walk. The specific site of pain is at the bottom of your heal.
- Foot stress fractures. These can occur in people who participate in high contact or high-stress sports such as long-distance running, gymnastics, dance and football. The broken bone can be caused by a single intensive trauma, all by repetitive stresses placed on feet and ankles. Therefore, a lack of training and building up of the support structures around a person’s foot and ankle can make someone more susceptible to stress fractures.
Wearing high heels every day can cause a whole range of problems. Because your weight is artificially shifted forward onto the balls of your feet…
- Your knees need to push forward to rebalance yourself
- . Your hips have to push forward to maintain balance
- . You have to hyperextend your back, pushing backwards to maintain balance
- the ball of your foot, which has some natural cushioning, can thin over time. This soft pad can begin to atrophy.
We, therefore, recommend not wearing high heels every day and ensuring you have well-fitting and balanced shoes.

One of the most common misconceptions about ingrown toenail treatment is that it is excruciating and incapacitating. In fact, the treatment is administered with minimal discomfort; the procedure is performed in the offices of our podiatrists; it lasts about an hour; and the patient is able to walk immediately after it is finished.
Orthotics or orthotics are shoe inserts that are specifically designed to support, align, or improve the function of the foot in some way. These are designed to provide body support from the feet all the way up to the head. This alleviates strain on the skeletal system, which includes our muscles, tendons, and joints, and allows us to move more efficiently overall.

Beaumaris Podiatry - Podiatrists Bayside, Melbourne
9589 4550
If you are concerned about your child's feet or if your maternal and child health nurse has recommended a foot check, please contact us because we can assist.
This is one of the most common causes of foot discomfort. The fact that your foot does not 'appear' to be injured despite the fact that you are suffering from heel pain can be extremely upsetting. Our podiatrists, on the other hand, have the education and experience needed to diagnose this condition and devise a treatment plan that will help you recover and get back on your feet as soon as possible.
Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs are the two most common causes of adult-onset heel pain. Treatment may include education about proper footwear, stretching routines, anti-inflammatory medication, strapping, exercise modification, and orthotics.
Children are also susceptible to heel pain. This condition usually appears between the ages of 8 and 13, when children begin to become more involved in extracurricular activities. A condition known as Sever's Disease, which is related to growth, can frequently cause heel pain in active children. Your podiatrist will be able to diagnose the issue, treat it, and educate you on how to avoid it in the future.
